Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship Program

Summary: The internship program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is designed specifically for advanced training in oral surgery with the goal towards eventual specializing. Successful applicants will be registered as postgraduate students in the Faculty of Dentistry for the length of their appointment. Candidates are encouraged to enroll in some courses and be engaged in a clinical research project with the goal of presentation and publication.

The OMFS intern will shadow a junior resident with didactic and clinical participation at Mount Sinai Hospital, Humber River Regional Hospital and Sunnybrook Hospital with commitments in the OMFS clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry. Interns will be registered and participate in Dental Resident Seminars (DEN999Y I) and OMFS DEN3001Y with active participation in weekly academic rounds.

Candidates must be aware that the program is an intense one-year commitment with call-duty responsibilities and considerable task-duties that require a time burden similar to surgical residency programs. Although the internship is not eligible for Professional Association of Residents of Ontario (PARO) status, the OMFS program is committed to follow, as best as possible, the agreements in place using the University of Toronto’s PARO agreement. Eligibility: Current dental students (DDS IV) or recent DDS graduate from accredited program (MUST HAVE LICENSE to participate). The applicant must be either a graduating or a graduate of a DDS/DMD , or of an equivalent ADA/CDA recognized dental program and eligible for licensure with the RCDSO.

Privileges: FULL

Status and Stipend: Successful candidates will be registered as a non-degree special student with the faculty for the duration of this internship. The cost of this program is $700 for the year and the stipend will be equivalent to that of the Hospital Dental Residents.

Deadline: The internship deadline for application is November 1 precedent year

Interviews: November of precedent year: Interviews are an integral part of the application process. Shortlisted applicants to the OMFS internship program will be invited for an interview via e-mail. Those not invited for interviews will be informed at this time as well via e-mail. Interviews will be held virtually and by committee.

Length of Position: One year commencing July 1st to June 30 the following year.

Practice of Dentistry in Ontario: Successful applicants will be required to obtain a General Certificate of Registration (licence) before they may practice in Ontario. Incoming residents should contact the Registrar well in advance of their official starting date to obtain annual licensing costs and to make the necessary arrangements.

Documentation Required for Program registration:

Immunization Record to be completed by your physician and submitted to the Director of Clinics (Clinic Office). All incoming students are required to submit a completed Immunization Record as a condition of enrolment. Forms will follow.

Proof of current CPR certification all graduate students examining patients and/or rendering clinical treatment to them are required to show certification in CPR before they may register in the first year of their program.

A) A paper application form: available here. Also available on the Faculty of Dentistry website.

B) A non-refundable application service fee of $275 CDN (money order or bank draft payable to the University of Toronto -- we do not accept personal cheques or credit card payments).

C) A Curriculum Vitae or Resume.

D) A one-to-two page statement outlining your interest in the program and including information on your background, interest, aptitude and ability for the internship program.

E) An official dental school transcript in a sealed envelope from the issuing institutions.

F) Two letters of reference in sealed envelopes.
