Overview

This training program is dedicated to clinical and scientific training in the management of temporomandibular joint disorders and the treatment of dentofacial deformities. The TJO Fellow will be involved in initial assessment, pre-operative planning, surgical treatment and post-operative management of patients undergoing surgical treatment of temporomandibular disorders. The TJO Fellow will also gain experience in the medical and non-surgical management of temporomandibular disorder and facial pain, working alongside OMF surgeons, orthodontists, periodontists, oral medicine and oral pathologists, neurologists and pain specialists through Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Clinical Care

Clinical care is the primary focus of the fellowship. Through the Centre for Excellence in TMJ reconstructive surgery program at Mt. Sinai hospital, the fellow will be involved in roughly 30 alloplastic total joint replacements over the 12-month period. Additionally, there is a significant volume of TMJ arthroscopy, including single and multi-port arthroscopic surgery. These will be focused at Mount Sinai Hospital, with some opportunities at other clinics. Fellows will work with the residents in the management of the relevant inpatients and outpatients on a daily basis, and are expected to develop their skills teaching residents informally and formally throughout the year and to cover call.

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery will be the secondary focus. The Fellow will act as a mentor/clinician in the combined orthodontic and surgical clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry. The Fellow will supervise the surgical orthodontic management, treatment planning, Virtual Surgical Planning and the complete digital component of patients in the clinic about to undergo orthognathic surgery. These Faculty patients are composed of facial deformities of congenital or traumatic origin as well as craniofacial anomalies and those requiring maxillomandibular advancements for the management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Also, the fellow will be expected to attend and participate in the role of surgeon or first assist in the over 200 orthognathic cases derived from private and Faculty patients, which are performed in the teaching hospitals alongside staff and residents.

Teaching and Research

Teaching and original research are the tertiary focuses but not exclusive. These will be key elements of the TJO Fellowship. Fellows are required to work on two projects (one in TMJ reconstruction and the other related to facial deformity correction or education) and then present these original research papers at a major OMFS meeting and publish at least two original articles in the OMFS literature. Research topics will be discussed and worked on prior to commencement of the Fellowship.
